Day 1: Land's End to Fowey

UK Cycle Challenge 2013

Day 1 of the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation's Land's End to John o'Groats Cancer Cycle Challenge saw most of the team ride a whopping 74 miles (120km).

After the rite-of-passage in front of the 2013 Land's End sign for the team, we set off on our challenge unsure of what the weather would bring - but to our relief, it only became more and more pleasant as the day continued. The journey along the coast to Penzance didn't turn up any pirates, but Peak Tours did provide welcome relief from the unsealed roads with a fantastic spread of snacks and morning tea.

Despite the glorious sunshine and scenery, and a stunning ferry crossing over the river Fal, our legs were tested with steep hills including a 14% incline into Fowey at the 115km mark for the day. Weary, but glad to have the first day behind us, the team regrouped for a pub dinner overlooking the stunning River Fowey before tumbling in to bed to do it all again tomorrow.
