Colorectal cancer (CRC), one of the leading causes of cancer death in the world, is a major public health problem inAustralia. While control through a national screening program is effective, it is costly; therefore primary prevention through dietary intervention is a promising and more cost-effective approach to reduce the burden of CRC.
The core focus of the research team in the Gastroenterology Epithelial Biology Research Group are:
- identifying early genetic and epigenetic biomarkers for dietary intervention (selenium, fibre, resistant starch, fish oil, green tea, curcumin, etc);
- understanding the impact of environmental exposure (red meat, high fat) and inflammation on DNA damage and increased risk of colon cancer, and
- improving chemopreventive efficacy by combining dietary agents that work through different mechanisms.
